Argentina is at the southern extreme of the American continent. Its total surface area is about 2.7million square kilometres. The country is 3,700 km in length, and the climate varies from subtropical to cold. Most of the country is in temperate climate zones, one-third in humid zones, while the rest is in arid and semi-arid zones.The Buenos Aires metropolitan area has a population of approximately 10 million, about one-third of the country's total population.
Cordoba and Rosario are the second and third largest urban centres, with over 1million inhabitants each. The Buenos Aires metropolitan area and its hinterland (the pampas) are home to two-thirds of the population.Argentina comprises 23 provinces; the self-governing Distrito Federal (Federal District), which consists of the city of Buenos Aires and several suburbs; the Argentine-claimed sector of Antarctica; and several South Atlantic islands.
