The South Bay area of Los Angeles County, also known as Southern Los Angeles County, is a coastal zone extending south from Los Angeles Airport through the community of Rancho Palos Verdes to Long Beach. Its boundaries can be roughly defined as the 90 Marina Freeway on the North, the Golden State Freeway 5 to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the South and the West. Included in this area are the incorporated cities of Culver City, Marina Del Rey, Playa Vista, Carson, Compton, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, the Palos Verdes Peninsula, as well as portions of unincorporated Los Angeles County and the Mid-Counties communities of Santa Fe Springs, Cerritos, Downey and Buena Park.
Historically, the South Bay economy has been dominated by aerospace and defense firms and other high-technology industries. In recent years other major manufacturing and non-manufacturing employers, particularly those utilizing Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have located in this area. Today the South Bay houses numerous regional, national and international headquarters including those of Japanese automobile companies, such as Nissan, Toyota and Honda. Other major employers are Hughes Electronics, Boeing, Honeywell and NCR.
The South Bay is heavily influenced by the economic activity generated by LAX and the World Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Together these ports and their related trade activities form a cornerstone of the Los Angeles economy.
