In the 1950's, the New Haven economy was based on the manufacturing industry. Today, while manufacturing continues to be an important component of the regional economy, the base of the economy has shifted to health, business, and financial services. The employment rate remains very stable due to some of the area's major employers: Yale University, Southern New England Telephone Company (SNET), Yale-New Haven Hospital, Hospital of St. Raphael, U.S. Surgical, Sargent/ASSA-ABLOY, Bayer Corporation, Bristol-Myers Squibb, United Illuminating, and Southern Connecticut State University.
