Washington, DC, the nation's capital, is a tourist paradise. The city's most obvious attractions are concentrated between the U.S. Capitol Building and the Washington Monument. You can visit the Smithsonian Institutions, various federal government buildings, drop in on your Congressman, go to the Library of Congress, take a tour of the Oval Office, or simply ride the carousel on the National Mall.
Washington also has a strong theater scene with mainstays such as the Kennedy Center, the National, the Warner, Arena Stage, and Ford theaters. The city also has dozens of historic churches and elegant former homes of the famous and semi-famous, and a ring of interesting Civil War forts. Alexandria, Virginia and popular Georgetown's historic streets contain some of the region's oldest buildings and historic residences.
The Potomac River's Great Falls are spectacular, and sites along the river offer boating and biking and hiking trails. Rock Creek Park, running through the Maryland suburbs and the center of DC, has picnic space, walking trails, and horseback riding.
