The Boston Metropolitan Area is comprised of the city of Boston and the surrounding cities and towns extending out to Interstate 495. It is the tenth largest Metro Area in the country and is the economic center of New England.
Boston has flourished economically in recent years. Unemployment has steadily fallen over the past five years and the Boston Metro Area is near the top of the national rankings with an average household income of $62,338. Much of this success can be attributed to the growing presence of high-tech oriented firms that have helped to shape the Boston business landscape. The number of Internet related firms are expected to double over the next two to three years.
Boston is a city wealthy in both history and culture dating back to the Colonial Period. Among the most well known attractions are the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Museum of Fine Arts, professional sports teams rich in tradition and many landmarks that are of significant historical importance. While Boston has long been known as a city bustling with activity both day and night, there are many other characteristics that make New England such a desirable place to live. Skiing in the mountains stretching north to Vermont and New Hampshire is an appealing activity during the winter and Cape Cod continues to be an extremely popular summer destination.
