Metropolitan Detroit, home to the "Big Three" automakers, is internationally recognized as the automotive capital of the world. However, over the years the local economy has become quite diverse. In fact, the region's central location, proximity to Canada and multiple transportation links, make Detroit a vital international trading channel and domestic distribution center. As such, the Michigan unemployment rate has come to mirror that of the US rate over the past 10 years.
The city of Detroit, at the center of the metropolitan area, has undergone a period of renaissance. This revival has energized the downtown housing, entertainment and government sectors through private investors as well as government commitments of over $7 billion toward a variety of projects.
The addition of the Edward H. McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport is the latest in this series of developments. In addition, new stadiums for the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions, three world-class casinos, relocation by General Motors Corporation to the renovated Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, and construction of a new headquarters building for Compuware are reinvigorating the downtown area.
