Saratoga Springs is a prosperous community situated at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. The existing population of 26,286 people has a median household income of $50,000+, and, coupled with consistent residential growth in the immediate area, positions the city for continued growth.
Vibrant Saratoga Springs has an active downtown market with a busy retail district along Broadway. It is home to the nation's oldest thoroughbred race track as well as a harness track at the Saratoga Gaming and Raceway. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center is also located in the city and is the summer home of the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Additionally, its location between the Adirondack, Green, and Berkshire Mountains with their many outdoor activities attracts visitors through all four seasons. Saratoga Springs is also home to Skidmore College, a four year private college as well as Empire State College. The museums, restaurants, and theaters of the Capital Region are minutes away, and Boston, New York City, and Montreal are each less than a three-hour drive.
In 2004, Sports Illustrated named Saratoga Race Course as one of the “Top 20 Venues of the 20th Century, “ saying “with its striped awnings, old wooden clubhouse and grandstand, and paddock shaded by elms, Saratoga transports you back to the days when people came to the races in the surreys with the fringe on top.” Attendance for the six week meet in 2005 was approximately 1,000,000. Anticipation is that the 2006 attendance will again break records. This marks the sixth consecutive year that the on-track handle on Saratoga races only, topped the $3.2 million mark.
Saratoga County, one of the fastest growing counties in all of New York State, is situated in the state's east-central region just north of Albany County, and is bordered to the north and east by the Hudson River and to the south by the Mohawk River. The diversity of Saratoga's communities and attractions has drawn visitors for years, but due to the excellent quality of life, they are increasingly becoming full-time residents. Just to the south of Saratoga Springs is the Town of Malta, home to the new STEP Park being built by NYSERDA as a technology park of the future with more than 280 acres dedicated to new office and technology-oriented buildings. The Luther Forest Technology Park is also located in Malta and is 1,350 acres pre-permitted for nanotechnology manufacturing and R&D.
The economic outlook for Saratoga County is excellent. Unemployment is a low 3.7% (November 2005).
