Long Island's vitality continues to amaze the business community as it has evolved and grown into one of the most successful work, live, play centers in the country. While early in its history Long Island's financial system was based on agriculture and later on the aerospace/defense industry, today the area is economically more diverse and flexible than ever before, with the high-tech, biotech, agricultural, financial and service-based industries all making Long Island their base of operations.
Long Island's 2.8 million residents comprise an affluent and highly educated population. Firms of all kinds are drawn to the area by the skilled workforce and thriving business community. In addition, both Nassau and Suffolk counties each have a host of amenities and leisure activities that make Long Island one of the most desirable areas to live and visit along the Northeast corridor. In fact, with more than 1,180 miles of shoreline, both counties have numerous beaches, water sports and recreational facilities which attract abundant tourism year-round. Nicknamed "Pleasure Island," more than 26 million people visit Long Island annually, contributing nearly $3 billion in revenues to the local economy.
