Syracuse is situated in Onondaga County, which is located in the north central portion of New York State.  The greater regional area is commonly referred to as Central New York.  The region is located just south of the deep water port of Oswego on Lake Ontario.  The City of Syracuse is in the center of Onondaga County and is surrounded by Cayuga County, Oswego County, Madison County and Cortland County.  Syracuse has been called the "Crossroads of New York" due to its central location and well-developed transportation network including:  an International Airport for passengers and cargo; intersection of two major interstate highways, I-90 and I-81; deep water port and canal system and passenger train and intermodal center.

Approximately 60 million people live within a 350 mile radius of Syracuse, including the populations of Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Montreal.  Within the Syracuse MSA, a total of 734,640 people reside.  This population base, combined with the City's transportation network, has made Syracuse a major distribution center in the Northeast.

Syracuse University continues to be a major employer in the area along with some of New York State's leading hospitals, including the State's presence at University Hospital.  This region's central location, low cost of living, strong labor force, excellent infrastructure and abundance of natural and human resources makes Central New York an attractive location for the existing diverse economic base.
