The City of Akron, located in Northeast Ohio, is a main corridor between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River. Founded in 1825 by General Simon Perkins and incorporated in 1836, Akron (Akron - Greek word meaning "high" since the Portage Summit was the highest point on the Ohio Canal) emerged from a settlement built upon the Ohio & Erie Canal to a major metropolitan municipality, whose name is recognized throughout the world.
Home to the world headquarters of Goodyear, Akron was once known as the "Rubber Capital of the World" throughout most of the 20th Century, where people came from all over the world to Akron seeking employment in the rubber industry. With the decline of the rubber industry, it left behind a research structure dedicated to the field of Polymers.
Today, Akron continues to revitalize itself and boasts much renovation as well as arts, theatre and entertainment activity. The Akron Art Museum is currently under renovation to complete a new modern arts style building. Akron completed the renovation in 2003 of the Akron Civic Theatre and also offers the National Inventors Hall of Fame; E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Center; Stan Hywett Hall and Gardens; The Akron Aeros Minor League Baseball Team (to the Cleveland Indians); Boston Mills Ski Resort and a variety of other museums and live entertainment.
