Located on the Susquehanna River, Harrisburg has grown from a modest ferry outpost to a picturesque capitol city. A burgeoning center for the region's arts and culture, the community offers all the pleasures of an urban metropolis while maintaining the warmth and caring associated with a much smaller town. Harrisburg was incorporated in 1860. The current population is 49,502.
Harrisburg contains many museums and parks, with both Penn National Racetrack and Indian Echo Caverns nearby. Our professional baseball team, the Harrisburg Senators, plays in the ballpark on City Island, which is located in the middle of the Susquehanna River. The city boasts a junior college - Harrisburg Area Community College - as well as Pennsylvania State University at Harrisburg, and Capitol College which is located in neighboring Middletown.
Of great interest to visitors is the State Capitol (completed in 1906), with its dome modeled after Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. The cornerstone was laid on May 5, 1904, with a metal memorial box placed within it by Governor Pennypacker.
