Rhode Island, also known as the Ocean State for its 400 miles of coastline, offers lifestyles for those looking for city living or country life. At the heart of this 50-mile wide state is Narragansett Bay, world famous for its fishing, 100 beaches and sailing. A little further inland is Providence, the site of the State Capitol, Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design, which also boasts one of the most historic collections of homes in the nation and is undergoing a residential building boom, with many new apartments and condominiums under construction or in planning. These developments range from new high-rise towers to revitalized mills.
Providence recently underwent a $1.5 billion transformation that urban planners across America call a model for downtown revival in the 21st century. The Providence Place Mall is one of the most significant additions and the site of the first Nordstrom in New England. It is expected to draw nearly 10 million shoppers a year. In addition, the relocation of two rivers and construction of several new bridges to create Waterplace Park has had a tremendous impact on the transformation of the city as well as improving access to I-95 and I-195 from the downtown area. Access is also enhanced by the reconstruction of our state airport, which is only fifteen minutes from Providence.
Providence's nationally acclaimed gourmet restaurants are in a league of their own; as Esquire magazine notes, "Providence has gained a formidable reputation as a restaurant city," while the Journal of Food and Wine compares Providence's "culinary treats to those found generally only in the grand cities of the nation, or in Italy."
As for ambiance and charm, Providence is unmatched. The city's vast and well-preserved historic architecture is like no other in the country. The entire downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places - the only major city to be so
designated
