Doug's managerial experience includes ownership of his own commercial real estate company from 1979 through 1994. At the company's height, there were 3 locations with over 100 employees. Prior to this period he spent four years in commercial fee appraisal work. In 1994, Robinson Sigma Commercial Real Estate, Inc., purchased his company's assets. Robinson Sigma became a Partner Office of CB Richard Ellis in September of 2000. Mr. Henkel is now a Principal in the Norfolk, Richmond, Charlottesville, Raleigh and Greensboro offices of CB Richard Ellis and serves as a member of their Board of Directors. In the last two years, he has closed over $1 billion in hotel transactions. Mr. Henkel is also a member of CBRE Hotels. Additionally, he has been actively involved in the development and ownership of hotel properties as well as the brokerage of golf courses.

His hotel brokerage activities involve transactions across a very broad geographic palette, with successful transactions occurring in states from Florida to Maine, and from Washington, DC to Los Angles, including coverage in Mexico and the Caribbean.
