E-commerce putting an end to brick-and-mortar retail is something that you’ll hear discussed continually these days, but there’s no truth to it. With the past three years having seen significant changes in the operating environment for both online and physical retailers, the real discussion is about how e-commerce is changing retail. Covering all of the new trends would be difficult, but among them are these: Stores are getting smaller, in order to cut back on inventories, and possibly to embrace the “showrooming” effect. Some stores are fulfilling and sending out online orders, acting more like warehouses, and some are giving customers the option of reserving items online and picking them up in-store. The retail environment is certainly changing—most of it prompted by online shopping.
