With the influx of both international and domestic retailers into Melbourne’s CBD in recent years, demand for prime retail space in the CBD is becoming increasingly competitive. Already known for its unique retail offerings, often in concealed in laneways and quirky buildings, tighter vacancy and higher rents on main strips in the CBD have begun to push some retailers into tiny spaces known as  ‘micro’ stores, sized at around 60sqm or less, with some retailers operating in spaces as small as 18sqm. ‘Micro’ stores are becoming an important and successful part of Melbourne's retail landscape, as Melbourne's population grows, consumer tastes change, and the concept of “destination” retailing grows. These micro stores provide an opportunity for a variety of retail types to have a CBD presence, driving a more diversified retail mix in the CBD.
