How can a commercial real estate services provider help during a global pandemic? In many ways, it turns out—especially when it comes to data, analysis and insight.
As a Director in CBRE Americas Research, Darin Mellott helps to develop CBRE’s national thought leadership, including macro views like U.S. economic and jobs reports, studies around policy-related issues, and more.
“Our company’s unique views span multiple sectors, so we have a lot of valuable intelligence to share,” Mellott explains. “We actively promote CBRE’s research analysis and build strong relationships with business and community leaders.”
Those relationships include Gary Herbert, the Governor of Utah, Mellott’s home state. In mid-March, the Governor convened an economic response taskforce to examine how to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic—and Mellott got the call.
“Personally, I’d been watching events in Asia unfold, because I was helping friends there get supplies. I had an early view of the lockdowns and saw the uncertainty that was coming. Consequently, within the taskforce, I advocated for a plan that people could understand and give them a way to stay positive and see a path forward. Others also saw value in crafting a plan and so it began.”
The taskforce based its response on one central premise: that public health and economic recovery are not mutually exclusive. Medical professionals on the team had full veto power over anything they considered. They also explained how the situation would progress and what would be necessary to achieve certain milestones.
As a result, the Utah Leads Together Plan
provides specific metrics and outlines what each phase will look like. Version 2.0 was released in mid-April.
Mellott continues to connect regularly with lawmakers on the state and federal level, the Governor, health experts and others, which gives him a much broader scope. He gets direct briefings on federal government actions, exposure to issues confronting states, and the latest insights of the medical community—information from the front lines. The fact that he both represents CBRE and helps his community in this unique position isn’t lost on Mellott.
“We’re very fortunate that—from the top down—our leaders encourage us to make meaningful contributions to society, to embody our RISE values. That approach makes it possible for us as citizens, and CBRE as a company, to have broader thought discussions, impact our clients, and support our communities. I’m just one small example of why that matters. For me, it’s an honor and a privilege to be in my seat.”
