While still lagging behind most peer cities across the U.S., downtown Seattle’s daytime worker population and office utilization rates have steadily increased since the start of 2022. This rise follows a year of modest gains in 2021 and a very quiet, pandemic-stricken 2020. Average daily bus ridership has also been trending upward, albeit at a more gradual pace, and is now more than twice as high as the Q2 2020 low of 117,804 average daily rides. For context, 22% of workers commute by transit and 21% commute alone by car, according to a recent Commute Seattle survey.
"As a growing number of employers formalize their hybrid workplace policies and office utilization rates keep ticking up in 2023, the daytime worker population should rise in downtown Seattle and so too should transit ridership."
