Data from November and the first half of December confirmed another strong year of consumer spending for 2023. Large cities like Portland, however, have seen reduced retail activity in their downtown cores. This has fueled rapid sales growth in suburban shopping centers and neighborhood hubs, where small boutiques bring character and curb appeal to urban neighborhood districts.
Neighborhood foot traffic has grown in each of the past three years and is on track to return to 2019’s highs by 2025.
