Oregon is crucial to U.S. semiconductor leadership, producing 40% of the nation’s microchips. The state’s semiconductor sector has outpaced national trends in GDP and job growth and supports numerous jobs, stimulating demand across industries. Oregon accounts for 9% of the national semiconductor workforce and institutions like Oregon State University contribute to workforce development.
Oregon State University is building a $200 million center, scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2026, to enhance research and provide cutting-edge resources for students. The state’s semiconductor-related program completions have been increasing at a faster rate than the national average, contributing to a growing workforce.
The Portland area, known as the "Silicon Forest," has the highest manufacturing employment density in Oregon, with a significant portion in computer and electronics manufacturing.
The federal CHIPS Act, with a $52 billion investment, aims to bolster U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and research, although ongoing support under the current administration is uncertain. The Oregon CHIPS Program offers $240 million in incentives to attract investments and create new jobs. The program also includes tax credits and loans to support semiconductor growth.
Oregon is positioning itself as a major player in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. Governor Tina Kotek proposed expanding Portland's urban growth boundary to accommodate a federal semiconductor research hub, which could bring in $900 million in investment.
