  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED certification, has been on the rise in Boston, underscoring the importance of sustainable building operations in an era of environmentally conscious regulation, leasing and investing.
  • In 2019, Boston unveiled a substantial update to the city’s Climate Action Plan, debuting the “Carbon Free Boston” initiative, intended to help the city achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 by introducing carbon targets for existing buildings.
  • While the Boston Zoning Code does not require new projects to be LEED certified, it does require buildings to meet LEED standards. To date, 85 Boston office and lab buildings representing over 45 million sq. ft. of space have taken the step of obtaining official LEED certification. This accounts for nearly 50% of total office and lab square footage within Boston proper.
