CBRE and Compass have been retained to market two landmark properties at 2234 and 2232 Massachusetts Avenue NW on D.C.’s Embassy Row. CBRE is leading the sale of 2234 Massachusetts Avenue NW, a Beaux-Arts office building formerly serving as the Irish Embassy and is ideally suited to accommodate embassies, universities, NGOs, and other institutions. Compass has partnered with CBRE to co-market 2232 Massachusetts Avenue NW, a neighboring residence with distinct architectural character.

CBRE’s Manny Fitzgerald is overseeing the sale and marketing of 2234 Massachusetts Avenue NW, while Compass’s Hans Wydler is leading efforts for 2232 Massachusetts Avenue NW.

“The chancery at Massachusetts Avenue has been a key part of Ireland’s story in Washington D.C. for over seven decades,” said Graham Ralph, Deputy Director of Property Management at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland. “Having now moved to new premises at 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue, we are proud to bring these two historic properties to the market. We look forward to seeing new ownership bringing their vision to life and seeing the properties continue to play a vibrant role on Sheridan Circle.”

Located at the corner of Sheridan Circle, 2234 Massachusetts Avenue NW is among the avenue’s most architecturally significant buildings. Designed in 1908 by William Penn Cresson, the semi-detached limestone property spans five levels and features dual frontage, grand reception rooms, and intricate millwork, making it well-suited for embassy, cultural, or institutional use.

“This is a truly exceptional offering in the heart of Embassy Row and one of the few properties fronting on Sheridan Circle,” said Manny Fitzgerald, Executive Vice President at CBRE. “2234 Massachusetts Avenue combines architectural pedigree, historic relevance, and unmatched location. We’re proud to represent the Embassy of Ireland in bringing this legacy property to market and look forward to identifying the next steward of its future.”

Next door, 2232 Massachusetts Avenue NW is a distinguished four-level residence built in 1900, offering seven bedrooms, formal entertaining spaces, a gourmet kitchen, and private outdoor areas with garage and off-street parking.

“These properties represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to own a piece of history on one of Washington’s most reputable avenues,” said Hans Wydler, Associate Broker, Wydler Brothers of Compass. “Embassy Row remains synonymous with prestige, influence, and global connection, making 2232 and 2234 Massachusetts Avenue rare offerings of unmatched significance.”

While each property is being marketed individually, together they also present a unique opportunity for a buyer seeking to assemble an extraordinary compound reflecting the historic character and enduring prominence of the neighborhood.
