At Least Leisure Travelers Are Back

The way a traveler books a hotel room shows how hotel activity has evolved since the beginning of the pandemic. Leisure travel has reached pre-COVID-19 levels, evidenced by bookings made through online travel agencies (OTA) and travelers directly booking via the brand's website or by phone.

These leisure-heavy booking channels accounted for three-quarters of all bookings in Q4 2021. But while many tourists are vacationing again, corporations have been slow to reinstate business travel, evidenced by sluggish bookings through channels used for corporate travel such as global distribution services. Business group travel, often associated with industry conferences, remains very thin. Most group travel activity is now driven by non-business groups, such as religious organizations and social clubs.
