Each group of stakeholders can independently shape the future of cities, but progress will be faster if they coordinate their efforts. All of these groups should coalesce around a common goal: creating healthy, vibrant cities for future generations. This cannot be done without urgent change, and all stakeholders need a place at the table to ensure change is smart and equitable.
Cities constantly evolve either organically or through stakeholder encouragement. As cities continue to adjust to accelerated post-pandemic change, they must also proactively address longer-term considerations around population growth and innovation. These include establishing places where both younger generations and the large older population can thrive, as well as building smart, connected and sustainable cities. Cities have access to a large and growing amount of data, which should drive decisions on shaping the future. Those that understand the composition of their market and leverage data to act intentionally around future demand drivers will be well-positioned to flourish.
